The most important aspect to remember is that the search engines all use text to search for a site. So it does not matter how nice your site looks, without the right text in the right places nobody will find your site.
The two places you have text are on the visible page, and embedded in tags in the header portion of the page. Both should be crafted to include terms and phrases someone looking for a particular product or service may use.
A site also needs to be fresh. If the content goes stale, your site will drop in the ratings. The more often the pages in the site are updated the better.
Beyond these two simple elements, there are a number of ways to proactively drive in traffic. Basically, you need to tell people you are out there — this can be via direct mail, e-mail, advertising (print and online), editorial, you name it.
